The scope of this chapter is intended to define more clearly its outlines, starting from a comparison of reverie with the other instruments of what he calls the dream spectrum (Civitarese, 2014b, p. 147). Homing in on reverie— described as “dreaming with our eyes open”—Civitarese suggests that it is similar to the state of mind Winnicott called “primary maternal preoccupation” or the particular receptivity needed to understand the baby’s needs by putting oneself at its disposal with one’s whole being.
